What to Expect from the First Session

The first session is typically a chance for your teen to get comfortable, understand what therapy involves, and start building trust. Depending on their age and preference, parents may join for part of this session to share context and goals, though many teens prefer to have this first conversation on their own, which is completely appropriate.
From there, we will work together to build a plan that reflects your teen's goals, and check in regularly to make sure psychotherapy continues to meet their needs.

How Sessions Work

Adolescence is a stage where teens are figuring out who they are, often while pulling away from adult guidance in favour of their own voice. I aim to create a space that respects their growing independence while still offering practical strategies and support. Psychotherapy and coaching sessions are conversation-based and collaborative, as well as often solution-focused, meaning that we draw on practical tools and strategies, depending on what's most useful for each teen.

What Parents Can Expect to See

While every teen's goals and progress are different, many parents notice their teen:

  • Feeling calmer and more equipped to manage stress or anxiety

  • Communicating more openly at home

  • Building stronger self-esteem and self-awareness

  • Navigating friendships and relationships with more confidence

  • Managing ADHD or OCD symptoms more effectively

  • Adjusting to family changes with greater resilience

  • Feeling more secure in their sense of identity and direction

Therapy isn't about changing who your teen is, it's about helping them understand themselves, build on their strengths, and move through adolescence with more confidence and less struggle.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What age range do you work with for teen therapy? The age range goes from 13 to 17.

Is online psychotherapy effective for teens? Yes, online therapy is often especially well-suited to teens, who are typically comfortable with virtual communication and may feel more at ease speaking from a familiar space than an unfamiliar office. They can also benefit from not adding travel time to their busy schedules. Overall, research supports virtual therapy as an effective option for adolescents when sessions are tailored to their needs.

Will you tell me what my teen says in session? Confidentiality is central to effective teen therapy as it is what allows adolescents to speak honestly. I generally don't share session details directly, though I will always let you know if there's a safety concern. Beyond that, I encourage (but don't require) my teen clients to loop parents in on their own progress and goals and we include parents as needed and when agreed upon.

My teen doesn't want to go to therapy. What should I do? It's common for teens to feel hesitant, especially if therapy feels like something being "done to them" rather than chosen. A free consultation can be a low-pressure way for your teen to ask questions and get a feel for whether this is a good fit, without any commitment.

Wondering whether online psychotherapy is the right fit for your teen? I'd be happy to answer your questions and help you decide together.
