How Sessions Work
Sessions are collaborative and grounded in evidence-based approaches, adapted to your family's
specific needs and your child's age and stage. Together, we might work on:
-
Understanding your child's behaviour in a new way
-
Building confidence in your parenting approach
-
Strengthening communication and connection with your child
-
Managing the stress or overwhelm that comes with parenting
-
Navigating co-parenting or family transitions
-
Reflecting on your own upbringing and how it shapes your parenting
-
Adjusting your approach as your child grows and changes
This isn't about following a single "right" way to parent. It's about finding an approach that reflects your values and works for your family.
What You Can Expect to See
Every parent's goals are different, but many notice they:
-
Feel less overwhelmed and more equipped to manage parenting stress
-
Understand their child's behaviour with more clarity and less reactivity
-
Feel more confident and less second-guessing in their parenting decisions
-
Communicate more effectively with their child, co-parent, or family
-
Navigate transitions — new baby, adolescence, separation, an adult child leaving home — with more resilience
-
Feel more like themselves again, not just "a parent"
Therapy isn't about becoming a perfect parent. It's about understanding yourself and your child more fully, and building an approach that feels sustainable and true to who you are.
What to Expect From the First Session
The first session is a chance for us to get to know each other. We'll talk through what's bringing you to therapy, some context about your family and your child, and what you're hoping to get out of the process.
There's no pressure to have a clear diagnosis of the problem going in — we'll figure out the right direction together.
From there, we'll build an approach that fits your family, and check in regularly to make sure therapy continues to meet your needs as your child (and you) continue to grow.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Is online therapy suited for parents? Yes, online therapy is a well-supported and often especially practical option for parents, who are frequently juggling childcare, work, and little spare time. Sessions from home mean one less thing to coordinate around.
Do you work with parents of children of any age? Yes, I support parents at every stage, from the early newborn years through adolescence and into adulthood. Parenting challenges look different at each stage, but they're all valid reasons to seek support.
Is this the same as the parent consultations offered alongside my child's therapy? No, parent consultations that accompany a child's therapy are focused specifically on supporting that treatment. This is separate: therapy for you, as a parent, whether or not your child is also in therapy.
Can we work on my relationship with my adult child? Yes, parenting doesn't end when your child turns 18. Many parents come to therapy to navigate changing dynamics with adult children, whether that's setting healthier boundaries, repairing a strained relationship, or adjusting to a more independent role.
Wondering whether online parent counseling is the right fit for you? I'd be happy to answer your questions and help you figure it out together.
